Accra: Building collapses at Roman Ridge, 14 construction workers rescued

A building under construction at Roman Ridge in Accra, near the Ghana Institute of Engineers (GhIE) recorded a collapse incident on Tuesday afternoon, trapping several workers beneath the rubble.

Emergency response teams from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) rushed to the scene and managed to rescue about 14 construction workers, who were found in critical condition.

The injured were transported to the 37 Military Hospital and the Ridge Hospital for urgent medical attention. 

The Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly and the Engineering Council have provided an official update on the construction incident that occurred on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at “The Address” project site at Roman Ridge in Accra.


According to them, contrary to initial reports, there was no structural collapse of a 10-storey building.

Rather, it was the first-floor podium concrete slab which, collapsed.

In the meantime, the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly has formed a seven-member independent investigative committee.

The committee, comprising experts from the Engineering Council, Architects Registration Council, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), and the Ayawaso West Assembly, is mandated to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation.

They are determine the root cause of the failure and to propose concrete recommendations to prevent any future occurrences.

The Ayawaso West Municipal Chief Executive, Michael Mensah, at a press briefing, explained that the incident occurred approximately 12:15 pm on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, and that it involved the collapse of the first-floor podium concrete slab, which was being cast.

He confirmed that 14 people who were working on the slab sustained injuries and were promptly transported to the 37 Military Hospital and Ridge Hospital for medical care.

As of 7:30 am Wednesday, October 29, 2025, 12 workers sent to the 37 Military Hospital had been treated and discharged, while two remained in stable condition under observation at the Ridge Hospital.

"We extend our best wishes for their full and swift recovery," the MCE said.

All work on the affected site remains halted pending the outcome of this investigation, the MCE added.

He said the committee will issue a comprehensive public report upon the conclusion of its work, and its findings will be instrumental in strengthening our enforcement and compliance mechanisms.

"We urge the public and media to rely on these official channels for accurate information. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and accountability in the built environment and in the Ayawaso West Municipality," he added.
