Ashanti Customs Division fails to meet 2014 revenue target

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in the Ashanti Region failed to meet its revenue target for 2014. The division could only mobilise Gh¢25.68 million, representing 22.26 per cent of its targeted revenue of Gh¢115.39 million for last year.

The Sector Commander, Assistant Commissioner Isaac Kofi Toffah, attributed the shortfall to the prevailing erratic power supply situation in the country which he claimed affected business operations in the region with the resultant reduction in taxes during the year under review.

Mr Toffah made this known at the 2014 end-of-year and send-off party for three retiring officers in Kumasi.

“The reason for not achieving the target is obvious. Any casual observer in the country would agree that our economy was severely challenged last year due to the power supply problems. This affected the business community resulting in the loss of revenue,” he said.

Mr Toffah said the Bulk Oil Supply and Transportation Company (BOST), whose petroleum taxes and levies were the main sources of revenue for the Customs Division in the region, was shut down from September 2013, to August 2014.

He was, however, certain that in spite of those challenges, the outlook for 2015 would be very promising.

Mr Toffah said following the current revenue trends in the region, the prospects for achieving this year’s target and even exceeding it was high.

Three retired officers of the division were commended and rewarded for their hard work and dedicated services to the division over the years. They were Mrs Lawrencia Abaga who served for 40 years, Mr Kwame Oteng, 37years and Mr Douglas Lumor 23 years.
