Bosomtwe Assembly suspends activities of prayer group

The Bosomtwe District Assembly in the Ashanti Region has suspended the activities of the Moment of Glory Prayer Army (MOGPA) group at Abrankese, because of the insanitary conditions at the Anane Boateng Stadium where MOGPA holds its programmes.

According to the assembly, indiscriminate defecation at the place had created a strong stench in the area, which had also been invaded by hordes of houseflies.

The situation, the assembly said, had been compounded by the presence of 42 mobile toilets that seemed to have been abandoned at the place.

A number of dumpsites are also located in the area, which nobody takes responsibility for.

Briefing newsmen, most of whom had covered their noses with handkerchiefs at the stadium, the District Chief Executive for Bosomtwe, Madam Veronica Antwi-Adjei, said the decision to suspend the group’s activities was also informed by the cholera outbreak in Accra and other parts of the country.

“The insanitary conditions at the place pose grave danger to the health of residents in the vicinity and patrons of MOGPA,” she said

Programmes organised by the ministry attract hundreds of people from other parts of the country.

Madam Antwi-Adjei told journalists that the reason for the assembly’s decision was to protect the lives of both patrons of the group’s programmes and residents of the area.

She asked the leadership of the group to, as matter of urgency, clean the area.

She said the assembly had tried meeting the leadership of MOGPA over the problem but that had been unsuccessful, leading to the decision to suspend its programmes.

Response from church

Speaking to the Daily Graphic on phone, the Founder and Leader of MOGPA, Rev. Isaac Osei-Bonsu, said the mobile toilets were hired and that the owners were supposed to pick them up after every programme - to  empty, clean and treat with chemicals before returning them.

He said a delegation from the church had met with some leaders of the assembly to find a solution to the problem but the discussions had been inconclusive.

Rev. Osei-Bonsu said as a result of the large number of people who took part in programmes at the stadium, the church was constructing 30 water closet toilets for use by patrons.
