The presentation of the two 42-inch LED digital television sets and a cheque with an undisclosed amount formed part of the company’s support towards this year’s 19th GJA awards, specifically the development journalism and the maternal nutrition categories.

GJA awards

Speaking at a short ceremony to present the items in Accra, the Director of Communications of the Melcom Group of Companies, Mr Godwin Avenorgbo, said the foundation made a decision to sponsor the awards because information dissemination was essential to bridging the development gap.

“We also want to associate with the award on maternal nutrition because we believe that the first tutorials in the journey of life begin with the mother and for that matter a healthy mother’s knowledge in nutrition is of tremendous benefit to the child,” he said.

As part of their silver jubilee celebrations, Mr Avenorgbo said the foundation had focused on improving the education and health sectors in Ghana.

Receiving the items, the President of GJA, Mr Affail Monney, commended the foundation for its support to the association.

He appealed to the foundation to scale up its support to the association in the long term and called on journalists to support the event.

Medical equipment

The foundation also presented a total of 15 wheelchairs and 18 pairs of crutches to five hospitals in the Greater Accra Region.

The hospitals are the Ridge Hospital, Achimota Hospital, La General Hospital, Police Hospital and the LEKMA Hospital.

Mr Avenorgbo appealed to the management of the beneficiary hospitals to take good care of the equipment.

Representatives of the hospitals expressed their appreciation to the foundation for the donation and added that the equipment would enhance their operations at the hospitals.
