Chief of Nkawie-Kuma, 7 others arrested

Eight people, including the Chief of Nkawie-Kuma, Nana Antwi-Adjei IV, have been arrested in connection with the break-in of the Nkawie-Kuma Royal Mausoleum.

The suspects are alleged to have broken into the mausoleum and made away with the right hand of Nana Twum Barimah Appau II, the late Chief of Nkawie from the casket.

Nana Twum Barimah Appau II died in 1972.

Key suspects

Other key suspects under arrest are the Krontihene, Nana Kofi Darko and the Akyeamehene, Nana Obirikrah, all of Nkawie-Kuma.

The three prominent chiefs as well as the five other suspects have, however, been granted self enquiry bail and are assisting the police in their investigations.

Background

Briefing the Daily Graphic Wednesday, the Atwima Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr Felix Fosu-Agyeman said an 18-year old mechanic, John Mensah, who was arrested the day the incident was detected was arraigned before the Nkawie Magistrate’s Court.

He said on October 20, this year, some unidentified persons broke into the Stool Room at Nkawie-Kuma and took away two of the stools.

According to him, in July, this year, unidentified persons again broke into the Royal Mausoleum and opened the caskets of the three ex-chiefs, but did not take anything.

They then went again on November 23, this year,  broke into the casket of Nana Twum Barima Appau  and made away with the body’s right hand.

The Divisional Commander said the suspects were arrested after intensive police investigations.

Further investigations, he said, were ongoing.
