The Vice-President, Mr Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, has explained that the government has had to implement some painful but necessary measures to surmount the current economic challenges.

Quoting the Quran, Surat Ash-Sharĥ 94:6, which reads in part “indeed, after difficulty there is ease” to make the case that sacrifices, patience and prayers do produce success, the Vice-President expressed optimism that the programmes and measures adopted by the government to fix the economy would yield the desired results soon.

Addressing Muslims at prayers at the Independence Square in Accra yesterday to mark the end of Ramadan (Eid-Ul Fitr), Mr Amissah-Arthur described the country’s current economic conditions as not the best.

He attributed the state of the economy partly to internal and external developments, and said the government was concerned about the long-term viability of the economy and its ability to sustain and improve living conditions.

Ebola

On the Ebola outbreak in parts of West Africa, Mr Amissah-Arthur underscored the need for the public to protect themselves from falling victim to the disease that had already claimed many lives.

He advised the public to be vigilant and encourage those with symptoms of the disease to report to the nearest health facility.

Among the symptoms of Ebola are fever, sore throat, joint and muscle aches, vomiting, weakness, stomach ache and dry cough.

Security

Mr Amissah-Arthur advised the youth not to allow themselves to be influenced by any individual or group to disrupt the peace and stability of the country.

He asked the Muslim community to maintain the togetherness that the Eid-ul-Fitr brought into being and remain caring in the years ahead.

He used the occasion to assure Muslims that the Ghana Pilgrims Office was working to make the organisation of this year’s Hajj even better.

The Spokesman for the National Chief Imam, Alhaji Ahmed Gado, appealed to the government to listen to the cries of the people and work hard to improve the economic conditions of the populace.
