The project, funded by the Helping Africa Foundation (HAF), a US-based charity organisation, is aimed at ensuring safety and security in the community.

The Municipal Chief Executive for the Ga South Municipal Assembly, Mr Jerry Acquaye Thompson, who inaugurated the the lights, stressed the need for a proper maintenance of the facility.

According to him, one of the best ways to express appreciation to HAF for the support in ensuring safety on the streets of Gbawe/ Mallam was for the community to put in place effective mechanisms to maintain the lights.

“The gesture expressed by HAF needs commendation and what better way to appreciate the facility than to ensure its sustainability,” Mr Thompson said.

He also entreated the chiefs and leaders to find ways of bringing development into their communities instead of relying on the government alone.

HAF determined

In a speech read on his behalf, the President of HAF, Mr Daniel Rose, said the project was mainly to enhance the well-being of residents of Gbawe and its surrounding communities.

“We have heard stories of night road accidents, muggings and robberies on some of these dark streets because of the absence of street lights,” he said.

According to Mr Rose, who is also the Development Chief of Gbawe, HAF was working with carefully-selected and closely-monitored local charitable groups of demonstrated competence and integrity.

“HAF endeavours to assure donors that their contributions will be spent effectively. We are happy to collaborate with the Ga South municipality and other local contractors to complete this important project,” he said.

Gbawe Kwatei family

The Head of the Gbawe Kwatei Family, Nii Adam Kwatei Quartey, commended HAF for assisting the chief to ensure safety on the roads.

He, however, called on the local authorities to enforce the laws to address criminal activities that hampered the development of the communities.

Nii Quartey said the lack of enforcement of the law had compelled some chiefs to use their own power to punish criminals.

BGI support

The Chief Executive Officer of  BG International, a US-based development firm, Mr Irwin Barkan, said the company was committed to improving the living conditions of the residents of Gbawe/Mallam, adding that “BGI would not relent in its effort to bring quality development to the community”.
