2 Perish, several injured in school bus accident
At least two persons have been confirmed dead, while several others, mostly schoolchildren, sustained injuries after a bus they were travelling on crashed at Aseseeso, between Adukrom and Somanya in the Eastern Region.
The dead have been confirmed to be a 65-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl.
The victims are reportedly from Ben Kunadu SDA Basic School in the Asante Akyem Municipality of the Ashanti Region and they were part of a group of learners travelling to Akosombo for an excursion when the crash happened.
The incident occurred when the bus, with registration number GV 83-22 and belonging to the Collins Senior High School in Asante Agogo, lost control while descending the Aseseeso hill.
The vehicle reportedly somersaulted multiple times before landing on its side.
Rescue efforts
The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey, who was passing through the area, joined rescue efforts and helped transport some injured students to the Yilo Krobo Municipal Hospital in Somanya.
An official at the Yilo Krobo Municipal Hospital confirmed that some of the injured had been brought to the hospital for treatment.
The hospital, he said, was currently managing the care of approximately 31 to 35 students, who were reported to be in stable condition, while other affected individuals had been transferred to the Atua Government Hospital for further medical attention.
“Also, two of the victims who are in critical condition, have been referred to the Eastern Regional Hospital for specialised care.
“Tragically, two individuals, a 65-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl, were brought to the hospital dead,” the official stated.
