AHISCO '99 Year Group marks 25th anniversary with medical outreach
The 1999 Year Group of Accra High School, known as “Onukpa 1999 Year Group”, has organised a medical outreach as part of activities to commemorate the 25th anniversary of their graduation.
It forms part of the Onukpa 1999 Year Group’s broader commitment to the welfare and development of Accra High School.
The exercise, which took place yesterday on the school’s campus, targeted both students and staff, aiming to screen between 800 and 850 students.
Medical outreach
Services offered included screening for diabetes, hypertension, hepatitis B, malaria, and body mass index (BMI) assessments through weight and height checks. Sanitary pads and mosquito nets were also distributed, particularly to boarders.
The President of the 1999 Year Group, Danmaz Abdullah Abdul Aziz, said the outreach was part of a year-long programme to give back to their alma mater.
“We have several programmes, and this health screening is just one of them.
We also intend to build dormitories and hold career counselling sessions,” he said.
He explained that students identified with concerning health indicators would be referred to major health facilities such as Ridge Hospital and the 37 Military Hospital for confirmatory tests.
The Head of the medical team for the anniversary project, Mayor Daniel Hammond, gave an assurance that the year group would cover the cost of further treatment for students referred to hospitals.
“All financial aspects will be taken care of by the 1999 Year Group,” he said.
Gratitude
The Headmistress of Accra High School, Evelyn Sagbil Nabia, expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as timely and thoughtful.
She said the screening would help uncover underlying health conditions among students, allowing teachers and administrators to better manage emergencies in the classroom.
“Certain times during lessons, you have emergencies, and you don’t know how to handle these students.
With this medical screening, it will expose any underlying condition that a student has,” she said.
The headmistress further praised the year group’s continued support and called on other alumni groups to emulate the gesture.
“These days, we rely on your kindness and love for the school to help us develop and put it on the pedestal we all want it to be,” she said.
