CBG donates to St. Mary’s R/C Basic School

Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG) has donated over 700 reading materials and a number of My First Copy Books to the St Mary’s R/C Basic School, Korle Bu, to boost the academic performance of learners.

The reading materials authored by Ghanaians, including the Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and Prof. Afua Sutherland, aimed to educate the schoolchildren on Ghanaian customs and traditions to preserve the country’s cultural heritage.

The gesture formed part of the company’s corporate social responsibility and its educational initiative to promote learning and literacy in schools.

Presenting the items  to the school at a ceremony last Friday, the Regional Manager of CBG, Accra Central,  Ami Korkor Adenu, who represented the Managing Director of CBG, Dr

Mrs Naomi Kwete, said the gesture formed part of the bank’s commitment to promoting equitable and quality education among girls.

Important

Ms Adenu said reading was important in shaping confident and responsible future leaders, as the learners cultivate a strong reading culture.

“Reading opens a world of information, and we believe these books will help your girls grow into confident leaders,” she said.

She said the bank deliberately selected St Mary’s R/C because of its focus on girls’ education, as empowering young girls had long-term benefits for national development.

“We chose this school because when you educate a woman, you educate a whole nation,” she stated, stressing that the bank was mindful of its role in contributing to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on inclusive and quality education.

She assured the school that the bank would continue to support literacy programmes and urged the learners to read to empower themselves to take over at the bank one day.

“We look forward to coming back to see how well you are doing through reading,” Ms Adenu said.

Gratitude

The Headmistress of St Mary’s R/C Basic School, Patience Addy, expressed appreciation to CBG for the donation, describing it as timely and impactful.

She said although the school faced challenges, the dedication of its teaching staff continued to sustain academic progress.

“We have challenges, but we don’t have challenges because we have hardworking teachers,” she said.

Mrs Addy said the books had come at an important time in the school’s academic calendar and would support efforts to strengthen literacy among the pupils.

“We need these books and they have come at the right time,” she noted.

She assured the bank that the materials would be put to good use to ensure every pupil benefitted from the reading resources.

“Everybody will have a book to read, going forward,” she said.
