GNAT supports Volta, Oti pupils with uniforms, other items

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) last Thursday presented 50 children from three selected needy basic schools in the Volta and Oti regions with school uniforms, knapsacks and sneakers at a ceremony in Ho.

The presentation was made to launch the 2025 GNAT Week celebration, which coincides with World Teachers Day, on the theme: “Elevating the status of teachers for quality education”.

The children, who were picked from schools in the South Dayi, Nkwanta and Jasikan areas, were also presented with footballs and stationery by the National President of GNAT, Rev. Isaac Owusu.

He said the Dordoekope D/A Primary School in the Krachi Nchumuru District of the Oti Region had been selected by the association for the construction of a two-unit classroom pavilion.

Rev. Owusu said GNAT recognised the sacrifices of its members, especially those in deprived areas.

He said each year, GNAT identified three needy schools in three districts to provide various forms of support as part of the association’s corporate social responsibility.

Rev. Owusu touched on the theme and said it was a clarion call on stakeholders, especially the government, to demonstrate true commitment to improving the welfare and working conditions of teachers.

“It also reminds us of the critical role a quality and motivated teacher plays in achieving educational goals,” he added.

On the service conditions of teachers, the national president of GNAT said deputy directors due for elevation were still marking time, “and so, the Ghana National Association of Teachers would soon escalate our demands beyond appeals”.

He commended members of GNAT for their valiant roles in education delivery, saying GNAT acknowledged their duties beyond the classroom as mentors, community leaders, and counsellors, which made them crucial nation builders.

The Volta Regional Chairman of GNAT, Wisdom Osei-Bonsu, said preparing learners for tomorrow required innovation, technology and inclusive teaching practices that reflected their needs today.

“So, we cannot afford to cling to outdated methods of mindsets in the rapidly evolving world of education,” he added.
