NHIS extends outreach to traders in Kumasi

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), as part of its mandate, has engaged traders in some selected markets in the Kumasi Metropolis, sensitising them to the need to be enrolled on the scheme.

The exercise, which employed a walk that lasted for about three hours, saw officials of the NHIS interact with traders on the enormous benefitsthat come along with the scheme, and the need for all not to be left out.

It was dubbed "Launching of Market Storm and MyNHIS App Sensitisation".

The team converged on the premises of the regional office of the scheme at Adum in Kumasi, and with the aid of a blaring sound system, walked through the Labour Roundabout to the Roman Hill Market, through Alabar Market to Dr Mensah, and ended the day's walk at Kejetia.

Numbering about 100 officials, the team, which was led by the Regional Director, Mohammed Muntaka, shared flyers of the scheme to the traders at each stop, and introduced them (traders) to the app, which made it easy for beneficiaries to renew their cards, and also attracted new entrants onto the scheme.

Speaking to the media after the walk last Thursday, Mr Muntaka said, "We call it storm because we want to reach out to our members, we want to move out from our offices, meet with them and explain things to them, in order to appreciate the efforts of the NHIS."

He said the MyNHIS app provided an easy-to-use and modern digital platform that allowed NHIS members across Ghana to conveniently access membership services.

He added that the app would enable people to self-enrol onto the scheme from the comfort of their homes, instead of visiting NHIS offices.

"Additionally, it will enable subscribers to renew their membership and that of third parties, access frequently asked questions (FAQs), aid in the location of all NHIS offices and also link NHIS cards to their Ghana cards," he stated.

Embedded with member authentication features, the upgraded NHIS mobile app, he stressed, operated on both Android and iOS smartphones and allowed subscribers to securely pay registration and membership renewal fees from their mobile money wallets, bank and Visa cards.

He commended dedicated staff, noting that their collective efforts had contributed to the scheme’s impressive performance in the region, and currently boasts over three million active members and more than 600 credentialed health facilities.
