The primary school complex which was inaugurated last Wednesday comprises a preschool complex, canteen, kitchen, lavatory, playground, computer laboratory and a six-unit primary school with ancillary facilities valued at GH¢5 million.

The school has been named James E. Kearney Memorial Roman Catholic School, after the young United States of America (USA) schoolboy who died of cancer.

The school complex is the brainchild of a citizen of the area, Richard Akrofi Baafi, who had travelled to Hungary to further his education. While there, now Rev. Fr Dr Akrofi Baafi, got into contact with some USA citizens to whom he expressed his ideas to put up a school project in his hometown.

The USA citizens bought into the idea and together established an organisation, the Africa Centre for Education and Community Development (ACECD), which started a fund from the contributions of schoolchildren back home, which included the family of the young US schoolboy, James Kearney, who died of cancer.

The contributions resulted in 70 per cent of the funds going into the school project, with ACECD contributing the rest, with a plan for a Junior High school and a hospital.

Gratitude

In his address, the Krachiwura, Nana Besemuna Mprah III, expressed his gratitude for the self-help spirit of the people, which resulted in the completion of the school in seven months. He expressed hope that the teachers and children in the area would use the new facility to improve themselves for the benefit of the community.

The acting Oti Regional Director of Education, Irene Attabra, expressed her delight and commended Dr Akrofi Baafi and the ACECD for constructing the school complex.

This, she said, had gone a long way to complement the efforts of the government in putting up schools in communities.

Mrs Attabra further called on parents to ensure they provided their children with the requisite needs to enable them to stay in school.

In his address, an official of the International Help of Missionaries in the USA, Rev. Fr Dr Cletus Forson, commended the ACECD for the project, which is a result of their good leadership roles towards the welfare of humanity. He noted that good leadership could result in rapid development for the benefit of society.
