Tourism high on Volta Region’s development agenda — Gunu
The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has reiterated that tourism promotion is high on the region’s development agenda.
He said as a result, a high standard of hygiene would be maintained in the region, while the roads to the tourist sites would be put in good shape.
He said the captivating landscapes, mountains and waterfalls in the region were now being underutilised and needed to be marketed vigorously to attract visitors from far and near for serious business.
Mr Gunu said vast wealth was waiting to be tapped from tourism development and promotion in the region, with lucrative job creation for the teeming youth in the sector.
He announced plans by the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) to hold discussions with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Arts soon on facilitating some specific tourist sites in the region, to boost the rapid growth of the sector.
Hoteliers
Making the announcement during a visit to his office by the executives of the Volta Hoteliers Association last Wednesday, he said the visit was timely and looked forward to similar visits in future for regular updates on their operations and tourism promotion plans.
Mr Gunu said the VRCC was also aware of the high cost involved in the operation of hotels and gave an assurance that it would be looked into meticulously to ensure the operators were not deterred from the business.
“We cannot have lively tourism activities in the region without a vigorous hospitality industry,” the regional minister pointed out.
Icon of hope
The chairman of the association, Henry Ampah Johnson, congratulated Mr Gunu on his new role as regional minister, saying his concern for the hospitality industry made him an icon of hope for the association.
He said good access roads to the tourist sites would definitely be a giant step towards the promotion of tourism in the region.
Mr Johnson pledged the association’s support for the VRCC in tourism promotion in the region.
He said the Volta Region was endowed with brilliant natural attractions, which must be harnessed to lift the region to a greater development pedestal.
