Under the project, two mechanised boreholes are being sunk to feed 24 public standpipes and a public sanitation facility.

 Funding

The Ghanaian community in Belgium is providing GH¢160,000 of the funds and the MP is supplementing it with GH¢40,000 from his share of the Social Investment Fund, while the residents provide labour and locally available building materials like sand and stones.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony of the project at Oda-Nkwanta last weekend, Mr Kwaku Boamah Acheampong, the President of the Ghanaian community in Belgium, advised the people of Oda-Nkwanta to offer the needed labour to ensure the early completion of the project.

Mr Acheampong also advised that the proceeds generated from the sale of the water should be used to finance other projects in the town.

Mr Quaittoo, for his part, commended the gesture of the Ghanaian community in Belgium and asked the town’s residents to take proper care of the project when it was completed.

 Water-borne diseases

The Birim Central Municipal Director of Health Services, Ms Anastasia Atiogbe, who was present at the ceremony, said the provision of potable water for the community would reduce water-borne diseases like cholera and diarrhoea in the area.

She also said it would also lessen the burden of women and children who travelled long distances to fetch water, sometimes from unhygienic sources.

Dr E. A. Ampofo, the Board Member of Community Livelihood Support Organisation, an NGO engaged in water and sanitation projects, implored the community to be committed to the project for it to be completed on schedule.

The chief of Oda Nkwanta, Nana Dwemena Akenten, expressed gratitude to their benefactors for the project and said he and his people would ensure the early completion of the project and its proper maintenance.
