The association has the aim of ensuring growth and development within the communities and their environs. The exercise by SEHRA had residents taking part to rid the area of filth.

Starting point

The exercise began at the crack of dawn from the Supermarket Junction to the Atomic Road Junction, near the University of Ghana Botanical Gardens. From there, the group moved onto the Agbogba road, then to the area called Selassie and ended at the J Hotel.

The residents cleared choked gutters and swept and picked litter  scattered about.

Using machetes and hoes, they also weeded and cleared overgrown bushes.

The residents were, in addition, educated to understand the difficulties that an unclean environment posed to the lives of the people.

The GEMA provided litter bins and trucks to cart away the rubbish.

High-ranking officials

A number of high-level personalities took part in the clean-up exercise. Among them were the Member of Parliament for the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, Ms Sarah Adwoa Safo, some executive members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the GEMA, Mr John Kwao Sackey.

Others were the Assembly member for the area and Presiding Member of the GEMA, Mr Edward Ayitey Aryee, and the Kwabenya District Police Commander, Superintendant Victoria Yamoah.

MCE’s address

In his address after the exercise, Mr Sackey praised the initiative by the association, and called on other residents in the area to emulate their example.

He charged them to not relent in their efforts but ensure that the area was clean always.

“It is a laudable idea to go round clearing filth from their surroundings. But you should not be the same people to litter the environment hereafter,” he advised.

The MCE subsequently donated assortment of drinks to the participants. Ms Safo expressed appreciation for the initiative by the association, and urged them to come up with more of such. She pledged her support for the exercise anytime she was invited.

Superintendant Yamoah urged the residents to report any criminal activity they observed in the community to the police. She said the police were prepared to protect life and property.

She further stated that she would become an affiliate of the association and ensure to take part in its activities.
