Under the patronage of the Omanhen of Essikado, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, the scheme has a 13-member board chaired by Mr Kojo Yankah, founder of the African University College of Communication (AUCC), with Mr Kwaw Ansah,  Chief Executive Officer of TV Africa, as the Vice Chair.

The reconstituted board also has representatives of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI).

A press statement issued by the Centre for Communication and Culture (CCC), creators of the scheme, and signed by its Executive Director, Mr Enimil Ashon, said the new board would be inaugurated in a ceremony at the National Theatre, Accra, on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 under the chairmanship of Professor Agyemang Badu Akosa, former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service.

The scheme, the statement said, seeks to recognise the contribution of creative geniuses in the arts and culture, governance, religion, science & technology, engineering, architecture and medicine.

Elaborating on the scope and definition of the awards, the statement said the organisers were looking for persons or institutions whose works had impacted society to the extent of them becoming national references.

It added: “This is not just another awards scheme. Nominees for honour will be men and women in whom dwells the African genius envisioned in Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s search for the African Personality.”

It further explained: “These are personalities who have become cultural and scientific institutions in themselves, geniuses whose creative efforts have, over the years, contributed to poverty reduction through job creation; a local and worldwide acknowledgement of the African creative intellect; a revival of indigenous technologies, and the empowerment of the African to believe in our own abilities and products.”

The ‘Osagyefo Awards’ will be organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. The process has been initiated to affiliate it to the African Union.
