Sylvester Mensah bearing international awards given to Ghana’s NHIS in Belgium

I have not resigned from NHIA - Sylvester Mensah

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority, Sylvester Mensah has debunked claims in sections of the media he has resigned his position.

Rather, he says he was handed a letter Tuesday relieving him of his post after six years in office.

He told Radio Gold he had been long notified of the development, based on which he sent a memo to staff to avoid needless speculation. He suspects some mischievous minds may have put a headline on the memo of his exit from office for distribution on social media.

“I could not have resigned,” he said, explaining that no appointee to public office is owed a tenure in office. He expressed gratitude to the government that magnanimously extended his stay in office for one more year after his initial five-tenure ran out.

Sylvester Mensah has been replaced at the NHIA by his deputy, Mr. Nathaniel Otoo, the Deputy Chief Executive, Operations in an acting capacity.

There are speculations Sylvester Mensah’s exit from the NHIA is part of widespread re-engineering in public institutions.

In his memo to staff, he acknowledged that “Together, we have placed Ghana’s NHIS as a leading model and an international case study for effective and efficient construction of a health insurance scheme in both developing and the developed world.”

He said he was exceedingly grateful to all management and staff for their co-operation, contribution and commitment to NHIA’s objectives and said he would have “fond memories of our collective passion to succeed, the occasional harsh decisions in our collective interests, the affections and comradeship we have shared, the principled loyalty and esprit de corps inherent in our working relations, as I leave office in the next few days.”

He also entreated the workers to accord his successor even more support and co-operation.
