An unemployed man is in the grip of the law when he was busted for possessing narcotics while he attempted to smuggle cigarettes to an inmate in police cells.

Agbodemegbe Atsu told the Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh, that he found the wrapper while sweeping and thought it was a toffee.

Atsu pleaded guilty to the charges of smuggling things into prison and unlawful possession of narcotics. But based on his explanation, the court entered a plea of not guilty for the charge of unlawful possession of narcotics.

The facts of the case, as presented by the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Kwabena Adu, were that Atsu, in the company of a certain lady, visited an inmate of the Baatsonaa Police station on April 16, 2016.

According to the prosecutor, Atsu was escorted to the cell area to talk to the inmate.

“In the process, he was able to smuggle six pieces of cigarette into the cell of the inmate he was visiting. A policeman on duty spotted him and was able to retrieve the cigarettes,” the prosecutor stated.

Chief Inspector Adu said a search on Atsu revealed one wrapper suspected to be Indian Hemp.
