The suspects were arrested in separate exercises conducted by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and other units within the Police Service.

Three of the suspects allegedly robbed a Swiss of his money and other valuables and raped his Ghanaian female friend who was in the house at Buokrom F Line at the time of the robbery.

The three are Dramani Sadique, 39; Kwame Boakye, alias Skido, 38, and Patrick Tetteh, 33.

Items retrieved included three live cartridges, one shotgun, one locally manufactured pistol, two jack knives, a machete, an axe and two hoods.

Connivance

The suspects allegedly connived with the houseboy of the Swiss, laid ambush on the road to his residence and stopped his car as he approached the house.

Briefing the media in Kumasi yesterday, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Osei Kwaku Ampofo-Duku, said the suspects allegedly took the Swiss to his house, where they took his money and other belongings and raped his female guest.

The remaining six suspects have been identified as Tawfic Nuhu, 19; Kofi Yeboah, alias Colomental, 19; Atubilla Anyerene, alias Boutique, 23; Osei Kofi, 35; Ernest Gyau, 27, and Mathias Akwansi, 25.

They were arrested in separate operations by the police for their involvement in armed robberies that occurred within the metropolis.

Items retrieved from them included scissors, hammers, a crowbar, pliers and a special dress used by the robbers for their operations.

Explaining Atubilla and Yeboah’s arrest, the Deputy Commander said on March 29, 2014, two armed robbery gangs at Asafo were engaged in a shootout following a misunderstanding that ensued over the sharing of booty.

Gunshut wounds

He said as a result, Atubilla shot Yeboah, who was rushed to the Agogo Presbyterian Hospital for treatment.

The incident led to the arrest of Yeboah, and later Atubilla.

According to ACP Ampofo-Duku, criminals in Kumasi were giving the police a tough time but he assured the public that the police would pursue them till the city was rid of criminal elements.

He said the police would do their best to prevent crime, adding that “even when they occur, we will ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and brought to book”.

In a related development, ACP Ampofo-Duku said on April 1 the police conducted swoops at Akwatia Line, Sepe Buokrom and Bomso, where some suspected criminals were arrested adding that after screening 41 of them were arraigned.
