That, she said, was necessary to complement the government’s effort at providing quality education for pupils and students in the remote parts of the country where libraries and computers were lacking.

Tour of communities

During a tour of Subinso, Kwabenaso and Manso-Kaniago where the Otumfuo Mobile Learning Project (OMLP) is providing reading materials for the pupils and students in the communities and giving them an opportunity to use the computer and the Internet, she described as crucial the role of Mobile Library projects and mobile computer training in the development of education in rural communities.

The project is to make computer with Internet connectivity easily accessible to students in deprived communities and to help them access books online.

As part of the project, beneficiary students would also have free computer training and personal enhancement programmes.

She urged the students to take Information and Communications Technology (ICT) training seriously, since the world was now a global village, with ICT as its development tool.

Project

The Otumfuo Osei Tutu Charity Foundation projects and programmes in education have over the years supported different initiatives which cater for schoolchildren in deprived areas.

The foundation has introduced  the OMLP which focuses on improving learning conditions of children by providing basic academic resources in a library such as reading books and computer lessons (ICT) to thousands of students in the primary, junior and senior high schools in Ghana.

The Mobile Library Project has 18 desktop computers, 30 laptops and hundreds of reading materials.

Sustainability

To help sustain reading habit among children, the OMLP team later presented over 100 African literature books and a bookshelf to the Subinso/Kwabenaso D/A Primary to promote learning in the community.

The team has spent two weeks in the Subinso/Kwabenaso and Kaniago D/A Primary schools educating pupils and students in nearby communities on how to read and use the computer and the Internet.

Lady Julia later presented an award to the headteacher of Subinso/Kwabenaso D/A Primary School, Mr Stephen Manu, for his dedication and commitment to education in the area. He was also presented with a citation and a kente cloth.
