Let’s rally behind govt – Rev. Dr Nyampong

The Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), Rev. Dr Samuel Ayete Nyampong, has called on Christians and, for that matter, Ghanaians, to solidly rally behind the government to improve the economy in this trying moment. He said the current economic situation in the country was not totally out of control if all Ghanaians, irrespective of their political inclinations, would join hands to work towards its improvement.

Rev. Dr Nyampong was speaking at the 42nd Dangme-Tongu Presbytery thanksgiving service at the Kolle Memorial Congregation at Sra-Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region.

The Dangme-Tongu Presbytery is made up of 15 districts, namely; Sokpoe, Mepe, Ada- Foah, Big-Ada, Great Ningo, Dodowa, Akuse, Sra, and Somanya. The rest are Odumase-Krobo, Manyakpongunor, Asesewa, Nkurakan, Sekesua and Obawale (carved from the then Ga Presbytery in 1972).

He said there was hardship and it was a trying moment for Ghanaians, especially Christians, but they must not take undue advantage and do anything untoward as that was against the principles of Jesus Christ.

Rev. Dr Nyampong cited an example of the recent attempt by drivers to stage a demonstration against the police for exhorting money from them, adding; “ I believe there are Christians among the police who have been extorting money from the drivers.”

He said no government could handle the country more effectively if the citizens were not involved, and called on the government to involve all and sundry, irrespective of political or ethnic affiliations in the governance of the country.

“We cannot tackle the problems from a partisan perspective and succeed as a country, and therefore, all hands from all backgrounds- be it political, religious, traditional, ethnic must be on deck,” he stressed.

The clerk of the General Assembly stressed that in spite of any condition the country was going through, the religious community should stand firm and not be involved in activities that would spell doom for the country, saying; “if Ghana sinks, it sinks for all Ghanaians”.

He called on the religious community to lead exemplary lives to give hope to the country.

Rev. Dr Nyampong announced that the PCG was embarking on a mission programme, dubbed; “Mission Blue Print,” to disciple church members to win more souls for the Lord.

He observed that righteousness exalts a nation, and called on all to follow the footsteps of Jesus Christ.

The Dangme-Tongu Presbytery Chairperson, Rev. Fred Nuer Appertey, who preached the sermon on the theme, “Jesus, the resurrection and life,” entreated all Christians to be faithful and loyal to God and humanity.

Earlier, there was a durbar for delegates from all the 15 districts of the presbytery, which elected Rev. E. A. Ahuma, the District Minister of Dodowa, as the new Presbytery Clerk to replace the outgoing Presbytery Clerk, Rev. James Agborli – Adjokatse, who would end his four-year service in August 2014.
