She also asked the teachers to encourage pupils to cultivate the habit of reading, since that was the best way to excel in education.

Mrs Sowah made the statement at the inauguration of a library and ICT centre constructed by Airtel Ghana for the La Wireless Cluster of Schools.

The projects

The two projects, valued at GH¢250,000, formed part of Airtel Ghana’s school adoption initiative under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) project. The ICT centre is stocked with 20 table-top computers connected to the Internet, while the library is also fully stocked with books for basic schools.

“It is important for teachers to guide the pupils to make good use of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure in the schools so that they will stay abreast of the rest of the world,” she said.

The Legal and Corporate Affairs Director of Airtel Ghana, Mrs Hannah Agbozo, explained that the school adoption project was an initiative by the company to contribute to the provision of education infrastructure for schools in deprived communities, adding, “It is a worthy thing to invest in projects that will help develop the future of children who will grow to be future leaders.”

She encouraged the beneficiary schools to take proper care of the facilities and promised the company’s commitment to have further collaborations to improve on education in the area.

Commendation

A Circuit Supervisor from the La Dade Kotopon Municipal Education Directorate, Mr Edward Opoku Manu, lauded the initiative by Airtel Ghana and said the facilities would help the pupils to have practical experience in the use of ICT.

“The era when teaching and learning of ICT was done in abstract will be a thing of the past. Teachers will no longer be compelled to carry their personal computers to the classroom to teach ICT. The period when pupils will have to spend library time in the classroom will also be a thing of the past,” he said.

He asked teachers and pupils to be motivated by the provision of those facilities  to improve teaching and learning.
