Man, 36, arrested for allegedly killing Immigration officer

A 36-year-old man who has been linked to the killing of three persons in the Tema metropolis has been arrested by the police.

The suspect, Ernest Awaya, alias Mustapha Awaya, was nabbed at Ashiaman Ashawo Line on Monday, November 10, 2014.

He is alleged to have killed Kofi Quist Defor, an Immigration officer; Henry Adu Gyamfi and Samuel Davis Ayibah, both businessmen.

The Tema Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mrs Beatrice Zakpaa Vib-Sanziri, told journalists that an accomplice of the suspect’s, Iddrisu Kenkensu, alias Idi, is currently on the run.

She recalled that on Saturday, December 28, 2013, Awaya shot Defor in the right shoulder and he fell unconscious.

She said not satisfied, Awaya used a hoe to continuously hit Defor until he died, in the presence of Defor’s wife, his three-month-old baby and other relatives.

She said in another incident on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, Ayibah, 55, was also shot in the head, allegedly by Awaya.

The Police Commander said further inquiries by the police revealed that Awaya, who was a pillion rider, together with Kenkensu,  the main rider, went to Community 4 and, without provocation, shot Ayibah, who had then parked his Toyota Highlander, with registration number GT 449-14, killing him instantly, after which they sped off.

Arrest

Mrs Vib-Sanziri said based on an appeal by the police, some residents gladly provided the police with useful tips which led to the arrest of Awaya, who she indicated doubled as a land guard.

She commended the public for their valuable tips and indicated that an identification parade would be held soon.

She also appealed to the public to assist the police in their investigations.
