Mine workers call for reinstatement of military protection
The Ghana Mine Workers Union has called for the immediate reinstatement of the military to protect concessions of AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Mine in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
The union said AngloGold Ashanti remained relevant and strategic to the economic development of the country, hence the need to give it the maximum protection from illegal miners.
A statement issued by the union said activities of the illegal miners and their recent ‘bizarre’ and ‘barbaric’ acts threatened the lives, property and jobs of the people in the sector.
The AGA Mine has been under serious threat from illegal miners who attack workers and properties of the company.
Last week, the Communications Director of AGA, John Owusu, died in a freak accident after a company vehicle trying to flee attack from illegal miners in the company’s concession ran over him.
