According to him, the police and the Fire Service were an integral part of the strategy to get the nation cleaned of filth.

He said based on a UN survey Ghana was placed among the 10 worst countries battling with sanitation, a situation which presents an unpleasant view of the country.

He noted that  the issue of insanitary conditions in the country was becoming intolerable such that a strategy had to be adopted to deal with it, hence the observance of the National Sanitation Day.

Mr Debrah said the first Saturday of every month had been set aside nationally for cleanup exercises and education on environmental cleanliness. He said the education aspect of the programme was also key to ensuring diligence in keeping clean all the time.

Response from IGP

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, said the police were ready and willing to take part in the national sanitation exercise.

He said the police were also concerned with the poor sanitation situation in the country since it affected the health of the people in the country and contributed to low productivity.

According to him, since there were police stations spread across the country, personnel of the service would readily be on hand to lend support towards the exercise.

Response from GNFS

The Chief Fire Officer, General J.B.E Guyiri, welcomed the idea of a National Sanitation Day and promised the participation of personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

According to him, the cleanup exercise cannot be effectively accomplished without water. He has, therefore, appealed to the Ghana Water Company to make water available on the day of the cleanup.

Just like the police, he said personnel at fire stations all over the country would be deployed for the exercise.
