New market complex for Ashaiman

A new market complex has been inaugurated by the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly as part of its agenda to facilitate what it describes as local economic development within the municipality and regeneration of the town.

The Ashaiman Market Complex, constructed under a Public Private Partnership agreement between the assembly and the traders, consists of 72 stores.

Under the agreement, the beneficiaries will occupy the facility for 20 years after which ownership would revert to the municipal assembly, but the beneficiaries could continue to operate the stores if they so wish and pay rent to the assembly.

Population

Ashaiman is a densely populated area and access to land for development is a major challenge confronting the municipal assembly. It is in the light of this that the assembly has decided to collaborate with others to accelerate the development of the municipality.

As part of that effort, the assembly decided to convert lands on which several containerised shops had been placed into a modern high-rise structure to optimise land use and boost businesses and commerce in the area.

Economic boost

At the inauguration of the facility last Saturday, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ashaiman, Mr Ibrahim Baidoo, said it was through economic activities that the living conditions of the people could be improved, hence the need to provide such modern facility for the people.

He stated that the assembly would pursue similar projects to assist the traders and the people of the area to help improve their livelihood.

The Regent of Ashaiman, Nii Anang Adjor, whose company constructed the facility, commended the assembly for the initiative.

He said the facility had not only brought a facelift to the municipality but would also go a long way to help reduce poverty in the area.

Maintenance

The Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Isaac D. Vanderpuiye, urged beneficiaries to ensure a strict maintenance culture of the facility.

He also urged them to pay their rates appropriately and promptly so that the assembly could embark on developing more of such structures in the municipality to benefit more people.
