New VAG law to benefit veterans

A retired general, Lieutenant General Lawrence Aboagye Okai, has described the passage of the Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG) Bill last year as one of the most outstanding achievements of the association.

He explained that given the numerous failed attempts to have such a law enacted in the past 20 years, members of VAG must be grateful to the government, since the new law was more relevant to the needs of veterans in the country than it was under the previous NRCD 285.

Addressing a parade to mark the 68th anniversary of the Battle of Myohaung at the Second Battalion of Infantry in Takoradi, Lt Gen Okai said the new VAG Law, Act 844, had been fashioned to serve the interest of veterans in the context of the national development agenda.

One hundred and fifty seven officers, men and women of the Ghana Armed Forces, as well as a contingent of the veterans, formed the parade.

Lt Gen Okai said it behoved the veterans to show their appreciation by uniting and planning with members of their communities and mandated public entities to support their localities, as well as their local and traditional authorities and the nation.

“We can organise clean-up campaigns, keep fit groups or team up with local members and groups to champion local initiatives,” he advised.

“Let us display the talents, skills and discipline we learnt while in service and apply them to the advantage of our fellow Ghanaians, he added.

Lt Gen Okai said gone were the days when VAG relied on the government of the day for assistance and financial support.

He strongly advocated for consideration a more profitable and professional use of the landed properties of VAG to generate alternative or additional funding.
