Police grab KNUST student, porter for tampering with ECG meters

A 19-year-old student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and a porter at one of the private hostels near the university in Kumasi have been arrested by the Kumasi police in connection with the alleged tampering of electricity meters.

The name of the student has been given as Raymond Fianyor, while the porter is Akwasi James.

According to the police, a three-man team from the Electricity Company of Ghana, led by a principal technician, Mr Clement Doku Appiah, had a tip-off that a number of the newly installed smart meters in some areas in Kumasi were being tampered with.

They said 13 rooms of the High Achievers Hostel, near the KNUST, had their meters reversed so that the same credits that were put on them at the time of installation remained on them perpetually.

The police also said others had been disconnected from the main switch to facilitate the illegal tapping of power.

They added that following the tip-off, the team from ECG decided to carry out a swoop but when they got to the entrance to the hostel, the porter impeded their movement and signalled his ‘cohorts’ to lock up the meter rooms.

When the ECG team struggled with the porter and entered the premises, they were locked up in one of the rooms as some of the students tried to tidy up, he said.

Rescue/Arrest

The police said some neighbours called in the Ayeduase Police, who arrived at the hostel shortly, released the ECG team and arrested the porter and the student.

The police commander said the police were carrying out further investigations into the case.
