Police probe deadly clashes at Homowo festival in Sowutuom and Anyaa
The Accra Regional Police Command has begun investigations into violent clashes that disrupted the climax of this year’s Homowo Festival at Sowutuom and Anyaa on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
Preliminary reports suggest that a misunderstanding between supporters of two rival chiefs during the traditional sprinkling of "Kpokpoi" escalated into gunfire. The violence later spread to Olebu as some attendees attempted to leave the festival grounds.
A police statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Supt. Juliana Obeng, confirmed that three people lost their lives in the disturbances. The deceased have been identified as Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah (alias Nil Kwashiebu), Theophilus Nil Amu Kwadjan, and Joseph Shalbu Dodoo.
Four others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at various facilities, including Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital. The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for autopsy.
The Regional Command has since deployed additional personnel to restore calm and assured the public that intelligence-led operations have been intensified to track and arrest all those involved in the clashes.
Police have further cautioned traditional leaders, elders, and their supporters to strictly observe agreed security arrangements and refrain from acts that could endanger public peace.
