‘Pregnancy should not result in termination of education’

The Founder and Chief Executive Director of Malwin Events Limited (MEL), Mrs Fathiya Halidu Imoro, has advised female students who become pregnant while schooling not to use their pregnancy as an excuse to end their education.

She said childbearing was not an excuse to end ones education because a number of student mothers had been able to complete their education at higher levels of study after childbirth.

Mentorship programme

Mrs Imoro gave the advice when she addressed students of the Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO) in Tamale in the Northern Region during their mentorship programme.

The event, which was organised by the 1997 year group of the school, with sponsorship from Malwin Event, was on the theme: “Raising tomorrow’s leaders today; a mentee today, a leader tomorrow.”

“Nothing should stop you from completing your education,” she said, and added, “Marriage is not a barrier to education”.

Mrs Imoro explained that female students could even engage in petty trading after school to finance their education to the highest level rather than giving themselves to men and explained further that, “Selling something to support your education or to lead a meaningful life is not an embarrassment”.

Mentors
Touching on the programme, the Headmistress of GHANASCO, Mrs Mary Asobayire Dan-Braimah, advised the students to have mentors, learn from their experiences and use them to improve on their lives.

She called on old students to assist the school in the areas of infrastructural development and particularly entreated the 1980s and 1990s year groups to give back to their alma mater in order to encourage the young graduates from the school to emulate their example.

“It does not matter how small you contribute, it will make a difference.” she added.

Mr Abdul Ganiyu Bangaham Seidu, an old student of the school, advised the students to back their dreams with positive attitudes.

He said without positive attitude and discipline, it would be difficult for the students to achieve their dreams.
