Rainstorm displaces Chereponi residents

Some residents of New Madina and Asylum Down in the Chereponi District of the Northern Region have been displaced after a heavy downpour.

More than 46 houses were destroyed in the four-hour rain which started at about 1pm last Sunday with accompanying thunderstorms and lighting.

Livestock such as sheep, donkeys, and cattle were killed while properties were also destroyed.

The District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. Jejece Amos told the Daily Graphic that a rescue team that went to the area met some of the residents crying and wailing for help.

The District Chief Executive for the area, Hajia Mary Nakobu described the incident as very devastating saying “we have been praying for the rains to come, but we never expected it to cause such damage , but we thank God that no life has been lost”.

She said the assembly and the NADMO were working to provide food and shelter for the victims.

Hajia Nakobu appealed to the government and other philanthropists in the region to come to the aid of those affected.
