Rotary Club of Accra-Odadee AOGA marks anniversary with life-changing donations

The Rotary Club of Accra-Odadee AOGA has marked its second anniversary and Mother’s Day celebrations with a major healthcare outreach project aimed at supporting mothers, newborns and vulnerable patients at the Shai-Osudoku District Hospital and the Achimota Hospital.

The humanitarian initiative focused on improving maternal and newborn healthcare while providing relief to struggling mothers and healthcare facilities.

As part of the intervention, the club, in collaboration with the Wheelchair Foundation and Chair The Hope, donated wheelchairs to support patients with mobility challenges within the beneficiary hospitals.

The club also presented newborn care packages containing essential baby items to new mothers to support them during the critical post-delivery period.

In one of the most emotional moments of the outreach, the club settled the outstanding medical bills of several mothers who had recently delivered but were unable to pay for their healthcare expenses.

The intervention brought relief and excitement to many beneficiaries, some of whom had faced delays in being discharged because of unpaid hospital bills.

Speaking during the presentation, the President of the club, Mother Teresa Brew, said the project formed part of Rotary’s commitment to maternal and child healthcare, which remains one of the key focus areas of Rotary International.

She explained that the initiative was deliberately aligned with Mother’s Day celebrations to recognise the sacrifices, resilience and strength of mothers.

Rotarian Mother Teresa Brew stressed that healthcare support remained a critical need in many communities and called on service organisations to continue complementing government efforts by responding to the needs of vulnerable people.

Officials at both hospitals expressed gratitude to the club for what they described as a timely and impactful intervention.

According to hospital authorities, the donations and financial support would help reduce pressure on both patients and healthcare facilities.

Several beneficiary mothers, many visibly emotional, also expressed appreciation to the club for the support extended to them and their babies during a difficult period.

The outreach highlights the growing impact of the Rotary Club of Accra-Odadee AOGA since it was chartered two years ago.

The alumni-based Rotary club, made up largely of former students of Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School and Aburi Girls' Senior High School, has undertaken a number of community projects focused on healthcare, education, youth empowerment and environmental sustainability.

Beyond the hospital outreach, the club extended its support to the Oti Region, where one of the donated wheelchairs was presented to a single mother in Worawora who has lived with mobility challenges since childhood.

Despite her condition, the woman reportedly works as a groundnut farmer to support herself and her son.

The donation is expected to significantly improve her mobility, independence and ability to carry out her daily activities.
