Two arrested over murder of former Dampong SHS headmaster
The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has arrested two individuals in connection with the murder of Eric Obeng Darko, a former Headmaster of Dampong Senior High School.
According to a police statement, the suspects — Mohammed Mubarak, aged 38, and Elizabeth Darkwah, also aged 38 — were apprehended on 9 and 17 June, respectively. They were subsequently arraigned before the Kodie and Suame District Courts.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that in 2024, Ms Darkwah allegedly defrauded the deceased by collecting an unspecified amount of money under the pretext of helping him unearth ancient family gold.
As part of the scheme, Ms Darkwah visited the victim’s residence at Bampenase near Mamponteng at night with Mr Mubarak, where they dug up 20 pieces of a yellowish substance, claiming it was gold requiring purification at her church before it could be used or sold.
Ms Darkwah later avoided all efforts by Mr Darko to arrange the so-called purification. She is reported to have then conspired with Mr Mubarak and three other suspects—currently at large—to abduct and murder the victim before he could visit the church.
Mr Darko was taken to Aboabugya, and when he attempted to escape, he was deliberately knocked down and run over by a Honda Odyssey driven by Mr Mubarak, leading to his death.
Both suspects have been remanded into police custody and are expected to reappear in court on 4 July 2025. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accomplices.
