Facts of case

The Deputy Accra Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Timothy Y. Bonga, told journalists in Accra that the three young men armed with locally manufactured pistols attacked the shop owner about 7.40a.m. on December 28, 2015 at Kwabenya.

He said the three suspects, who posed as buyers, approached the shop owner on the pretext of buying a shower gel.

As they waited to be attended to, he said, the suspects pointed pistols at the shop owner, threatened to kill her and forcibly tied her mouth and both hands with a sellotape.

He said, the thee packed the items from the shop into bags, after which they boarded a taxi cab, with registration GW 8845-15, and sped off.

The victim who was rescued by a passerby contacted the police immediately, leading to the arrest of the two.

The police patrol team, who gave the suspects a hot chase after responding to the call of the shop owner, was said to have had a tough time with the suspects who struggled with the patrol team members.

In the course of the struggle, Mr Bonga said the suspects managed to throw one of the pistols in their possession into the bush, but it was retrieved later by the police.

When they were searched, the police retrieved AA cartridges, two pistols and some ammunitions from them.

Mr Bonga said upon interrogation, the two suspects admitted having committed the offence.
