Volta GNAT-Ladies support Ho female prisoners
The Volta Regional branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers Ladies Society (GNAT-LAS) has extended support to the female ward of the Ho Prison.
The group donated food items, disinfectants, and toiletries to support the feeding of the female prisoners and to make life comfortable for them.
Inmates must be loved
The Volta regional coordinator for GNAT-LAS, Nana Yaa Owiafe, said the group decided to mark the International Women’s Day (IWD) with a presentation to the female prisoners and spend some time to encourage and let them feel loved.
“These women are still part of us and one day when they have finished serving their term, they will join us. We don’t have to let them feel neglected but let them have the hope that there is still a better life ahead of them,” she stated.
She said it was the duty of members of the society to look around and identify groups which needed assistance and offer them such help to reduce the burden on government.
Nana Yaa Owiafe said citizens formed the government, so if individuals would go out of their way to assist such people, “then we as a government are working”.
The officer in charge of the female ward, Supt Grace Allan-Gayinah, who received the items on behalf of the service, said it was very important for philanthropists and organisations to show benevolence to the prison service to surmount some of their challenges.
GH¢1.08 feeding fee per day
She disclosed that the government fed the inmates on GH¢1.08 per day which was inadequate and, therefore, needed support to complement government’s effort.
She said, “It is support from people like these that keeps us going”, and appealed to the public to assist in putting smiles on the faces of inmates to make life worth living for them.
She assured the group that the items would be put to proper use to address some of their challenges.
