The project, being undertaken by the Crops Research Institute (CRI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, is aimed at introducing the farmers on the productive use of land to reduce deforestation caused through traditional farming practices.

Speaking to the media, Dr Hurry Asumadu, an Agronomist at the CRI, said the farmers were introduced to new yam farming techniques in areas of fertiliser application, seed treatment and weed control among others.

He said the time had come for yam farmers to adopt and embrace agronomic practices of farming to improve yield, and efficient use of land in their communities.

Mr Mahama Abdulei, a yam farmer, in his comments, was full of joy to be among the yam farmers, who had been equipped with the yam agronomic practice of farming.
