Assembly members must account for stewardship— Torgbui Kwesi ll

The acting Fiaga of the Kpalime Traditional Area, Torgbui Adza Wiah Kwesi II,  has expressed his displeasure over the behaviour and attitude of most assembly members in the traditional area.

He said this was because they hardly consulted or interacted with community members before assembly meetings were held.

“Matters discussed at the assembly levels hardly reach community levels and some of them have aligned themselves to political parties and are doing the bidding of their masters; which is even against the Local Government Act”, he stated.

Torgbui Wiah Kwesi II was addressing the 18th edition of the “Kpalikpakpa” festival of the people of Kpalime Traditional Area in the Ho West District of the Volta Region last weekend.

He, therefore,  called on the seven communities in the traditional area to ensure that every assembly member in the area gave account of his/her stewardship with verifiable evidence of contributions and benefits to the community before they were given approval to contest again or voted for.

Torgbui also commented on the discrimination against some communities due to incongruous demarcations between the Ho West and South Dayi districts and called on District Chief Executives (DCEs) and Members of Parliament (MPs) of the two adjoining districts to synergise and share in the scarce resources available to reduce the discrimination against those communities.

According to him, Wegbe Kpalime was located between Avenui Awudome and Bame Awudome which were both in the Ho West District with Wegbe in the South Dayi District but when the common road network joining the three communities was designed for rehabilitation or the distribution of educational materials took place, the Wegbe community never benefited because it was located in the Ho West District.

“This current situation is not helpful, quite unfortunate and needs to be looked at”, he stressed.

He asked citizens to contribute towards the development of the traditional area themselves, adding that it was sad to note that many capable citizens were rather putting up magnificent buildings and other structures outside the traditional area to the detriment of the development of the area.

He said they preferred developing other traditional areas, adding that when some of these citizens passed on they became a challenge or burden to their families and the community who bore the brunt in managing the crowd of mourners that followed to pay their last respects.

In an address, the Ho West District Chief Executive, Mr Samuel Ewoade,  announced that the area was to benefit from a water project funded by the Spanish Government and that it was designed for 12 communities in the Ho West, Adaklu, Agotime-Ziope and Central Tongu districts.

He re-assured them that there was relentless effort to complete the age-long Bame-Kpedze road.

The DCE for South Dayi District, Mr Semenu Bekui,  charged the people to celebrate the festival with a tangible project to show as an accomplishment of the vision of the people of the traditional area.

The chairman for the festival, Torgbui Azadagli Dededo I,  said chiefs had been chosen by the people to champion the development aspirations of communities and that it was an ancestral heritage but unfortunately some citizens had remained adamant and turned into hermits and failed to respond to the development needs of their people.
