He needed at least two-thirds of the votes, but at the end of the process, Dr Lamptey secured a 100 per cent endorsement by all nine assembly members in addition to the four government appointees in the assembly.

He was declared the winner by the Municipal Electoral officer, Mr George Sisu, after a peaceful election was conducted.

Forty-five-year-old Dr Lamptey is a senior lecturer at the Department of Marine and Fisheries Sciences at the University of Ghana, Legon. He takes over from Mr Aristo Aryee, the immediate past MCE.

Present at the occasion were the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, and the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Ishmael Ashitey.

Vision

Dr Lamptey outlined his vision to see an improvement in the development of the municipality at the end of his tenure.

He stated that he would ensure that an oil palm factory was set up in the municipality to create jobs for the people in the municipality.

“I will bring my technical expertise to bear  in areas such as science, technology and agriculture. In view of that, we will embark on a rigorous precision farming agenda to ensure the government’s Planting for Food and Jobs policy is fully utilised in the municipality.

“There are a lot of water resources in this area, so we will set up a water filtration machine to produce bottled and sachet water in large quantities for sale to generate income for the assembly,” he emphasised.

Roads

Dr Lamptey expressed dissatisfaction with the state of disrepair of roads in the municipality, and expressed his resolve to fix them.

He also promised not to abandon the development projects his predecessor had initiated for accelerated development.

“I don’t believe in abandoning projects which were started by my predecessor and I will ensure that I complete them in due course,” he said.

Partnership

Dr Lamptey further stated that he would work closely with the assembly members, and called on them to continue to discharge their duties with focus and tenacity of purpose.

He added that the doors of the municipality were always open to partnership from the other assemblies within the Greater Accra Region to foster development and better the lives of the people.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, one of the aspirants for the MCE position and an assembly member in the area, Nana Sarkodie Boateng, said the assembly members were ready to work with the MCE to enhance development in the area.
