Greenstreet canvasses for votes in Ashanti

The Presidential Candidate of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Mr Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, has appealed to the people in the Ashanti Region to vote the CPP ticket in the upcoming November elections.

Addressing the media at the Bantama Palace in Kumasi to begin his "Intensive Six-day Tour" of the Ashanti Region, he observed that electorates in the region were noted for their strategic abilities and that he would canvass for their votes ahead of the elections.

He said though some political parties might want to claim Ashanti to be their World Bank, the CPP believed that the people in the region were strategic in their choices and would vote for the party based on its campaign policies and programmes.

He, however, asked the people in the region to buy into the CPP's policy to present something new in the life of Ghanaians on what he termed "Apam Foforc" (New Covenant).

Investment in agriculture

He said the CPP would be investing a lot of money into agriculture, especially to enhance the existing opportunities and requirements for cocoa, maize and cassava.

Mr Greenstreet said the party would, therefore, place priority on feeder roads, irrigation and provision of technical inputs as well as extension services to farmers to make the sector attractive to the youth.

The presidential candidate noted that Ghana could get a lot in the area of making money and job creation from planting almonds.

He indicated that California in the United States, which is supplying 80 per cent of the world market with almonds, was making billions of dollars annually, stating that oil extracted from the fruits could be as rich as $10,000 a tank - a venture Ghana could learn from.

It was against that backdrop that he said the CPP had noted that  almonds grew quickly within two and a-half years and could be grown anywhere in the country, a profitable venture which needed to be taken seriously.

He said Ashanti Region was also noted for its interest in agriculture and that the policy, if endorsed, could be worth billions of cedis and provide numerous job opportunities.

"With the seeming agronomic conditions necessary for the Green Gold of almond tree and the legendary entrepreneurial spirit of Asanteman, I see another cocoa revolution coming," he stated.

Election of MMDCEs

Mr Greenstreet recalled the CPP had since 2000 made it clear that it was in favour of electing all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives  (MMDCEs) as against nominating and appointing them.

This, he stressed, if endorsed, would ensure greater progress in development and accountability for all regions in the country.

He said Ghana had seen numerous decays and rots in the various assemblies because the MMDCEs, who were not elected by the people, had resorted to personal gains, hence the reason governments underperform in the assemblies.

Hope, Justice & Opportunity

He stated that the CPP was the only party that had in place policies and programmes to offer hope, justice and opportunity for the people.

As part of the tour, he paid a courtesy call on the Kokofuhene, Barima Offe Akwasi Okogyeasuo II, and addressed a large gathering of party members who had thronged the Ejura Market. He urged them to work "bone and marrow" for victory for the party in the Ashanti Region and Ghana as a whole.
