Mahama must apologise for "insulting" us – Minority

The Deputy Minority Leader of Parliament, Dominic Nitiwul, has demanded an apology from President John Mahama for saying the minority Members of Parliament were sleeping on the job.

Mr Ntiwul who was making reference to comments the President made in the Volta Region last week to the effect that, if NPP MPs were among those approving loans for government projects in Parliament and yet still turned around to ask what the funds had been used for, then it made sense to say that they had been sleeping in Parliament.

The comment did not sit well with Mr Nitiwul, who told Accra-based Citi FM that the President’s comments were insulting to the minority and that an apology from him was required.

Mr Ntiwul said “...it was not a wise thing for anybody to insult members of parliament particularly the minority."

“He [ Mahama] knows what to do. He should withdraw it immediately and apologize to the people who voted for us because I did not come here on my own.

“I am not sleeping. Neither are any of the minority MPs sleeping.”

The Deputy Minority leader added that many of his colleagues felt “hurt” and “betrayed” by the President’s remarks.

He said: ”It’s clear that the minority are not happy with the President’s comments. They feel hurt. They feel betrayed…Betrayed because for the past one month that the majority members have been working in their constituencies and are not in parliament, it is the minority that passes bills, loans, work with government, correct things that they bring, do winnowing of bills and for anybody to insinuate, to even say, that the minority are not working, they are sleeping in parliament is very very unfortunate.”
