Mr Emmanuel Reagan Fynn, Oforikrom Constituency Youth Organiser of the (NDC), who kicked against the idea, stressed the need for the party to deepen internal democracy for sustainable growth.

Vibrant

He said building vibrant internal structures would help breed healthy competition in the party and enhance its chances of claiming victory in the 2016 general election.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, Mr Fynn kicked against suggestions by some party members that President  Mahama must not be contested in the NDC’s flagbearership race.

“For me, it is necessary for the National Executive Committee (NEC) to encourage all those who are interested to contest for the flagbearership,” he said, adding that this was critical to avoid divisions and acrimony borne out of disagreements within the party.

Party activists

Some party activists have recently been proposing that the President should be re-elected as an unopposed candidate since that would engender continuity and absolute unity in the NDC and its development agenda.

They also argued that President Mahama had already won the goodwill of the electorate, and that this placed him in an advantageous position to win the presidential election.

Mr Fynn said much as the suggestions carried some weight, “we must not lose sight of how some impositions in the past brought its own challenges to the NDC.”

The youth organiser indicated that to prevent internal wrangling, it was appropriate for the party to do what was right to maintain its momentum in the Ghanaian political landscape.
