NPP targets 30 per cent votes in Volta Region

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Kwabena Agyepong, has predicted that the party will win over 30 per cent of popular votes in the Volta Region.

Speaking to party officials from the 26 constituencies in the Volta Region in Ho, he assured them of the preparedness of the flag bearer and the leadership of the party to "match the NDC boot for boot in the 2016 elections".

According to him, the party had put in place strategies and programmes aimed at ensuring visibility in the region.

He urged party officers to eschew division and work towards attaining what he described as an "achievable goal".

The National Chairman, Mr Paul Afoko, described Election 2016 as a redemption mission.

He told the party officers that they had a role to play in ensuring that Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP would win the majority votes to form the next government to "save Ghana from the current mismanagement".

National officers of the NPP are meeting party executives in the regional capitals to brief them on their strategies ahead of the 2016 election.

In another development, the party has noted with deep concern the meek response of the NDC government towards the gruesome xenophobic attacks in South Africa which have claimed the lives of many Africans, including some Ghanaians.

“Considering the serious nature of these events, our government was expected to, among other things, unreservedly condemn these attacks and, in concert with other African governments, exert the necessary pressure on the South African authorities to act swiftly and decisively to end these barbaric and inhuman attacks on other Africans,” a statement by the party stated.

In that statement, the NPP said so far the NDC government had shown a lackadaisical attitude which was manifest in its inability to communicate to Ghanaians any measures it was putting in place to assist Ghanaians in South Africa, neither had it outlined any contingency plans to evacuate them, if necessary.

Even more damning was the posture of the Foreign Minister, Ms Hannah Tetteh, who blatantly refused to speak to a local radio station on the issue and arrogantly said she would only do so on Radio Gold, a known NDC radio station, the NPP stated.

According to the statement, her conduct was as reprehensible as it was insensitive, especially in a matter involving people’s lives and emotions, and called on the President to act decisively on her indiscretion.

“The NPP strongly urges the President to carry out his sworn obligation under the 1992 Constitution to protect the life and safety of every Ghanaian, whether home or abroad. The party shares in the pain and suffering of the many Ghanaians whose loved ones have been caught up in this unfortunate situation,” it concluded.
