Politicians must safeguard peace of nation — Bishop

The Bishop of the Effiduase Diocese of the Methodist Church, Right Reverend Robert Osborn Eshun, has reminded politicians not to renege on their responsibilities to protect and safeguard the peace of the nation.

He urged politicians to have the interest of the nation at heart and put it ahead of any personal or sectarian interest.

Rt. Rev. Eshun wondered why some politicians had the attitude of trying to win power at all cost even against the wish of the people which is likely to create unnecessary tension and end up exposing their selfish interest.

He was speaking at the opening of the 19th annual synod of the Effiduase Diocese of the Methodist Church in the Ejisu Municipality in the Ashanti Region.

The four-day synod was on the theme: “Witnessing to Christ: The Methodist Identity and Social Impact-Effiduase Diocese in Perspective.”  It brought together delegates from the Effiduase Diocese of the church.

Advice

The Bishop advised politicians to be decorous and civil in their choice of words, especially during the campaign period as they solicited for votes, knowing that in politics only one party would win.

Rt. Rev. Eshun cautioned the various political parties that much as they were optimistic of winning this year’s general election, they should also prepare their minds to accept defeat.

He advised the media and the Electoral Commission (EC) to be circumspect in dealing with the respective parties in order not to mar the existing peace in the country.

Fairness

The Bishop cautioned the EC to be neutral and fair to all political parties while urging the media to be careful not to inflame passions during political campaigns.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr John Alexander Ackon, in an address read on  his behalf commended the various religious groups, especially the Methodist Church, for their role in the nation’s development.

He called on the various religious groups in the country to pray for a peaceful co-existence and the conduct of a peaceful general election in November.

The Chief of Ejisu-Onwe, Nana Danka Gyeabour, challenged Christians to let their beliefs reflect in their lives for others to emulate.

He urged the various religious groups to use their platforms to educate people, especially the youth, to ensure that the upcoming general election was devoid of violence.
