Medeama, Dwarfs, Chelsea in dicey duels
Ghana’s Berekum Chelsea face a tough assignment in Libya this weekend as they contend with Ahly Benghazi in the CAF Champions League after drawing 1-1 at home in the first leg.
Having dropped a vital home point in the first leg at Berekum last Sunday, Chelsea now have a huge challenge of progressing into the next stage with the Libyans determined to win at home to secure their qualification.
The head coach of Berekum Chelsea, Tony Lokko, now holds the destiny of the Ghanaian side against Ahly Benghazi, who proved how ruthless they could be at home in the previous round.
As things stand now, Chelsea need an away win at all cost or technical qualification unlike their opponents who will still be okay with even a barren draw.
Apart from Chelsea, two other Ghanaian clubs - Medeama SC and Ebusua Dwarfs - also confront away oppositions in the Confederation Cup today and tomorrow respectively.
However, Medeama clash with Moroccan side, MAS, in Fes at 7 p.m. tonight with 3-0 goals already in their basket, while Dwarfs dare Angolan giants Petro Atletico in Luanda tomorrow in search of round of 16 tickets.
A fantastic strike by Malik Akowuah in the first half, followed by two fabulous drives from Kabiru Imoro and Kwame Boahene in the second half were enough to put the hosts in pole position ahead of the second leg.
Though daunting, Maghreb de Fes will try to upset the Ghanaians at home though that appears a tall order against the highly determined Medeama boys.
Ebusua Dwarfs will also be looking forward to progressing to the next stage with their two-goal advantage against Petro Atletico, who are quite experienced in Africa.
Goals from midfielder David Gomes and Ricky Adjei Mensah gave Professor Mintah’s side a head start in the first leg in Cape Coast last Sunday, but the Angolans will obviously fight back in an attempt to overturn the deficit and qualify.
