FOOTBALL

Football fans will be delighted to see La Liga back in full force, with the resumption of the title race between Barcelona and Real Madrid the highlight, while African fans will also be able to watch heroes from our continent such as Thomas Partey, Aissa Mandi and Samuel Chukwueze return to action.

The pick of games on offer in this week is the meeting of Real Madrid and Valencia at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on the evening of Thursday, June 18, with the latter's Central African Republic midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia looking to thwart the Los Blancos stars in the 'engine room'.

RUGBY

Professional rugby returns with two matches from New Zealand's Aotearoa: Highlanders v Chiefs and Blues v Hurricanes on Saturday, June  13 and Sunday, June 14 respectively. The rugby matches will see the introduction of several new innovations, including golden point and the ability to replace players following a red card. Existing laws at the breakdown will be applied more strictly to create faster attacking ball and a fairer contest.

Chiefs coach Warren Gatland said the golden point initiative will add a whole lot of excitement: “I know rugby league has been doing it for a long time and there is nothing wrong with looking at other sports and seeing what’s working well for them. It’s been a huge success in rugby league and if it can be successful in this competition maybe they’ll embrace that and use it going forward. We can all benefit and learn from each other and these are positive initiatives.”

GOLF

The first PGA Tour event to return to the golf calendar is the Charles Schwab Challenge, with Days 2, 3 and 5 live on SuperSport from June 12 to 14, while Thursday, June 18 brings Day 1 of the RBC Heritage tournament from South Carolina.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC ) was one of the first sports to return after the effects of world events and continues to host events at its APEX facility in Las Vegas with UFC Fight Night: Eye v Calvillo on the morning of Sunday, June 14. The main card is a Women’s flyweight match between Jessica Eye and Cynthia Calvillo.

The main card will also feature a co-main event between Middleweights Karl Roberson and Marvin Vettori. The pair have major bad blood between them after two previous cancellations and UFC president Dana White is expecting a thriller.

"There are a lot of fights when guys talk smack, and then there's heat... and then the fight sucks," White said. "That will not be the case with this fight. Vettori is so fun to watch fight. This guy goes for it. He goes for the finish in every fight, and Karl Roberson is the same way. This is a fight that has potential for Fight of the Night or Performance of the Night."

PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING

The WWE has also been going strong for several weeks now and will hold another pay-per-view special with ‘Backlash’ on the morning of Monday, June 15. The event will be headlined by a match for the WWE Championship between title holder Drew McIntyre and Bobby Lashley. McIntyre has been the champ since WrestleMania when he defeated Brock Lesnar in impressive style, but Lashley -– with his incredible power and athleticism -– represents a genuine threat to the Scotsman’s reign.

“Drew McIntyre, he’s the ‘chosen one’ right? I not only have to beat him, I have to beat the office and I gotta beat all the UK [United Kingdom] fans, and I gotta beat everybody that’s pushing for him,” said Lashley. “I definitely want to win a world title. I definitely want to. The years that I’ve put in the business and the matches I’ve had with so many different people, I definitely want to.”
