Federations demand equal treatment for all sports

The heads of sports disciplines, with the notable exception of football, have demanded equal treatment from the state for athletes participating in the other sports.

The group of federation heads stated that athletes who participated in sporting disciplines such as hockey, weightlifting, taekwondo, boxing, among other disciplines were not second-class citizens and, therefore, the preferential treatment football enjoyed had the potential to kill the other sports.

Addressing a press conference in Accra yesterday, the spokesperson for the federation presidents, Mr Nestor Galley, called for an equal and level playing field for all athletes irrespective of their discipline.

Rashid Sumaila - determined to soar high

Kuwait is an unlikely place for young Ghanaians when choosing a destination to start their football careers but after his botched stint with Mamelodi Sundowns, Rashid Sumaila has no options than to turn to the Gulf region for fresh opportunities.

The multi-sport event was part of a week-long celebration dubbed ‘National Interfaith Harmony Week’, but as at 9a.m. only the host club, El-Wak Keep Fit Club, had turned up alongside a few dejected officials of the council who were perched morosely on seats at the venue.

Concerned about the poor turnout, the Director of Finance and Administration of the council, Oheneba-Kofi Ntiamoah, had hinted the Daily Graphic that the event would be called off if, at least, 10 keep fit clubs did not turn up.

His expectation was not met and the organisers were left with no oher choice than to call off the event at 10a.m.
