Youth Peaceful Elections Unity Soccer Gala underway in Accra
A three-day football tournament aimed at promoting unity and peace among Ghana's youth has kicked off at the Kawukudi Astroturf Park, as the country prepares for its upcoming elections.

The Youth Peaceful Elections Unity Soccer Gala, running from September 21 to 23, 2024, seeks to use the power of sport to foster cooperation and discourage political violence.
Themed "One Goal, One Vote, One Ghana," the event brings together 16 teams from local communities in a knockout competition, with the primary goal of uniting the youth and spreading a message of peace during the election season.
Awalu Angulu, Youth Leader and President of the Concerned Nima Citizens Foundation, praised the initiative. “It’s football for unity, football for peace,” he said in an interview, urging young people to avoid political violence before, during, and after the elections. “We want the youth to channel their energy into something positive. This event is not just about football; it’s about securing a peaceful future for all of us.”
The tournament's opening matches saw 133 FC from Fadama defeat Tabarama 11 from Madina 2-1, while Wise Man FC also edged past Cowlane FC with a 2-1 victory. The second round, featuring the top eight teams, will take place on Sunday, with the finals scheduled for Monday.
While there is a grand prize of GH₵10,000 for the winning team, the organisers are keen to emphasise that the primary focus of the event is promoting peace and unity.
Several notable community leaders, including Serki Hakeem Musah of Madina, Asa Awel Abdel Aziz of Fadama, and the Kajanga Youth Chief, are expected to attend, underlining the importance of leadership in promoting peace during this critical election period. European scouts will also be present, offering local players a chance to showcase their talent on an international stage.
