Seven male FIFA referees were given their badges, while seven assistant male referees also received approval from the world governing body.

Daniel Nii Ayi and Prosper Adii are the new names on the list of international match referees, with Eric Nanatiere being the only new FIFA assistant referee. They received their FIFA badges from acting GFA President, George Afriyie during a presentation ceremony in Accra last Friday.

Four female FIFA referees and four assistants also received their badges.

Joyce Obenewaa Appiah was the only new women's FIFA referee, while Theresa Akongyam and Millicent Kanor were the assistant referees to be elevated.

"Refereeing in Ghana has come under a lot of scrutiny. I would want to use the opportunity to caution our elite referees to lead by example for the younger ones to follow," Afriyie told the referees at the ceremony.

He also encouraged them to work hard to gain recognition at the international level.

"You can use your performances on the local scene to catapult yourselves to international prominence for more Ghanaian referees to be recognised at the high level.

"We must improve our performances to get among the best referees in Africa and the world and I am confident  this crop of referees can deliver."

The Chairman of the Referees Committee of the GFA, Randy Abbey, was delighted that more young referees were getting their FIFA badges.

He stressed that the recent appraisal of the work of referees in the country by the GFA had brought the best out of referees . — ghanafa.org
