AFCON 2025: Burkina Faso claim late win against 10-man Equatorial Guinea

Burkina Faso produced one of the most dramatic moments of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, scoring twice deep into stoppage time to stun 10-man Equatorial Guinea 2–1 at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca on Wednesday, December 24.

Edmond Tapsoba scored the decisive goal in the final seconds, heading home a rebound to complete an extraordinary late turnaround.

The match was goalless at half-time, but the contest swung five minutes after the restart when a VAR review upgraded Basilio Ndong’s yellow card to a straight red for a studs-up challenge on Bertrand Traoré.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Equatorial Guinea took a shock lead in the 85th minute when unmarked substitute Marvin Anieboh planted a superb header into the top corner from Carlos Akapo’s delivery.

Burkina Faso poured forward as eight minutes of added time were signalled and were rewarded when Georgi Minoungou latched onto a precise pass, following a deft touch from Brentford’s Dango Ouattara, before calmly firing a low finish to equalise.

Equatorial Guinea barely had time to regroup before Tapsoba struck the winner, reacting quickest after goalkeeper Jesús Owono could only push a cross into his path.

Burkina Faso travel to Rabat on Sunday for their second Group fixture against Algeria (17:30 GMT), while Equatorial Guinea remain in Casablanca to face Sudan earlier the same day (15:00 GMT).
